Entry for December 30, 2007

Happy New Year Everyone!

I tried to leave everyone a Merry Christmas message on here last week, but Yahoo didn't think I should. So . . . I am hoping this will work.

This is a picture of my Amaryllis that I just found out wasn't an amaryllis. It's a Hippeastrum. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippeastrum ) It's is a 3rd generation plant. DH's grandfather gave a bulb to MIL, and she gave us a few from her plant (well . . . 4 or 5 actually) at the end of this summer.

Anyhow, one of them flowered already. Didn't expect any flowers from this planting until next year. I was happily surprised.

Bobbi: Yay Tammy you got to post! That is an Amaryllis; they admitted a few decades ago that when they called it Hippeastrum that it wasn't the best choice. I have a book on amaryllis from back in '51 that I wouldn't give up for anything. I collect them and used to breed them back in San Bernardino, then someone stole all my offspring that were due to bloom......took the heart out of me. I am glad you are continuing to grow them and yours should bloom 2 times a year for you as they do for me. Learn about them, don't over feed, but don't underfeed, don't over water and let them rest for a month or two to get them to bloom again.
