Knitting is boring?!?!

What?!

The person who is my immediate supervisor at Michael's (she's called the class coordinator) was talking to me a couple of weeks ago about my classes. She wants to help me advertise and promote my classes, so they don't die off during the summer.

Well . . . she said "Explain to me how knitting can be exciting. Because to someone like me, who isn't that interested, knitting seems kind of . . . . boring." What?! I grabbed my heart and fained an attack! "Edie! How can you say that!" She said, "I'm sorry. But . . . like that dish cloth, how can we make that seem exciting?" Pointing to my sample board, with some fuzzy scarves a sock and a dish/face cloth. I explained to her that they aren't just for dishes.. I have a standing request for FACE cloths from my friend in NC every Christmas. Her son and her will ONLY use my wash cloths to bathe. They are a natural material (cotton) and they are great for exfoliating. She said maybe I could put a bar of soap or small bottle of body wash with a cloth to express that idea to people looking at my board. We discussed the relaxing traits that go with knitting, and how it has become one of the new de-stressers for the 21st century. - .

That's when it occurred to me that Edie needed a hand made face cloth! I made one for her the next day, and gave it to her at my next class. When I saw her last week, she was a convert! She may not be excited enough to try knitting herself yet, but she most definitely loves the knitted cloths! She put in an "order" for a few more!

Bobbi C: Atta Girl!!! That is how I came to like mine; you know, I STILL haven't woven in the end, and it still works just fine, thankyouverymuch. LOL. Non knitters, what can you say?

Dilys S: Hmmm.. You could also have thrown this one at her: Studies have shown (you gotta love statements that start with "studies have shown..."!!) that the repetitive movements of knitting have the same effect on brainwaves as deep meditation. How's that for encouraging knitting?

rachelle: What!!! Well maybe she will change her mind now that have given her a cotton washcloth... I have been told that knitting is for "grannies". I just laugh. I am almost 38 years old, and don't have children, so I will never be a granny.. LOL! She just doesn't understand.

Michelle: I too have had similar comments, boring, and it’s for grannies. I agree that it is because they have never tried it. It is amazing how people can judge things without having any knowledge of what they are judging, how do they get those opinions anyway? You handled that beautifully and I enjoyed the story. Thank you for sharing it.

Lizzie: I read recently that knitting is one of the top activities to ward of senile dementia.

It's hard, I think to "see" the benefits of knitting. It's more of a "feel" the benefits of knitting thing, I think.
